“This book presents around 450 different book artists. Mainly from Sweden, many though internationally active, but also quite a few from Denmark and Germany.
Books made by artists, artists’ books, tell a story of their own. But what is an artists’ book? It is difficult to draw boundaries although the phenomenon has played important roles in many art movements – from constructivism to situationism and underground But, as many say of all the new representational methods that entered the art world artists’ books were the only one with the capacity to include such widely different g forms of expression as text, drawing, poetry, prose, painting, transcriptions, instructions, music, collages and documentation – and these books can even be perforative. This transnational genre of art exists outside institutions and galleries. And even if its history is not so obvious, one thing is sure, it is alive and Ewell, thriving particularly in workshops, studios and at our art schools in neighbouring countries like Denmark and Germany, thus influencing the Swedish scene. It is a story about codex, the book, bringing get experiences of the old printing offices into contemporary art life.

This is indeed the first survey of artists’ books from a Swedish point of view. Each chapter is an essay, a way to see and understand artists ́ books from different views – like The social room, The Body, Berlin, The workshop, The library and archive etc.”

Este libro presenta alrededor de 450 artistas de libros diferentes. Principalmente de Suecia, muchos aunque internacionalmente activos, pero también bastantes de Dinamarca y Alemania.
Libros hechos por artistas, libros de artistas, cuentan una historia propia. Pero, ¿qué es un libro de artista? Es difícil trazar límites, aunque el fenómeno ha jugado un papel importante en muchos movimientos artísticos, desde el constructivismo hasta el situacionismo y el underground. Pero, como muchos dicen, de todos los nuevos métodos de representación que entraron en el mundo del arte, los libros de artista fueron los únicos con la capacidad para incluir formas de expresión tan diferentes como texto, dibujo, poesía, prosa, pintura, transcripciones, instrucciones, música, collages y documentación, y estos libros pueden incluso ser perforantes. Este género de arte transnacional existe fuera de las instituciones y galerías. E incluso si su historia no es tan obvia, una cosa es segura, está vivo y bien, prosperando particularmente en talleres, estudios y en nuestras escuelas de arte en países vecinos como Dinamarca y Alemania, influyendo así en la escena sueca. Es una historia sobre el códice, el libro, que trae experiencias de las antiguas imprentas a la vida del arte contemporáneo.

Esta es, de hecho, la primera encuesta de libros de artistas desde un punto de vista sueco. Cada capítulo es un ensayo, una forma de ver y comprender los libros de artista desde diferentes puntos de vista, como La sala social, El cuerpo, Berlín, El taller, La biblioteca y el archivo, etc.
