Agotada desde hace mucho tiempo, esta colección fundamental de ensayos y fotografías del artista, teórico y cineasta Allan Sekula fue publicada originalmente por el Nova Scotia College of Art and Design en 1984. Sekula buscó retratar el vínculo inextricable entre el trabajo y la cultura material, dibujando profundamente en la teoría marxista para defender apasionadamente un modelo colectivo de progreso. Sekula enseñó en el Instituto de Artes de California (CalArts) desde 1985 hasta su muerte en 2013, y desde esa posición privilegiada criticó la fotografía y las circunstancias de su producción y consumo, exponiendo lo que el medio no logró representar: mujeres, trabajadores, minorías y el estructuras institucionales que refuerzan los prejuicios culturales.
